Testaccio an ancient district
In the II century B.C the stretch grounds of Testaccio were destined to host the new port facility dedicated to the trade of food products, among other things as wine ,wheat, oil and garum.Between the first century BC and the third century D.C a large area for the treatment of products was born and developed: conservation , distribution and the birth of the Roman popular cuisine.Perhaps as early as the first century D.C and until the middle of the third century D.C the imposing organized landfill of oil amphorae reserved for free distribution gave birth to Monte dei Cocci(deposit of broken amphora) the eight hill of Rome !Between the 5th and the 7th century D.C the stretch of level ground undergoes a progressive phenomenon of ruralization and starting from the Medieval Age it is destined to the plantation of vegetable gardens and vineyards. The “meadows of the Roman people ” were left to the public enjoyment of the Romans who gave life to the “Roman haunts” days of celebration during which the “old” wine preserved in the “caves” obtained at the base of the “Monte dei Cocci”was given to make room for the new wine.

Modern era and the local market
After the unification of Italy ,with the master plan of 1873, the foundations of the new industrial and workers district were laid.On the first 1st of December 1891 the slaughterhouse designed by Gioacchino Ersoch , was inaugurated. From the benches of the historic local market born in Piazza Mastro Giorgio in 1920 ,the Roman cuisine based on meat scraps (trippa) was born. On December 9 1921, Testaccio was established as the 20th district of Rome . In 2012 was inaugurated the new local market designed by Marco Rietti, which immediately established itself as the reference and wine hub of the capital.A real agora of the district , the market is a promoter of social and cultural initiatives including “Assaggi di Storia”(taste of history) a true journey through history of Roman cuisine. The partnership with Uber Eats allows the market to be connected with the digital community. The commercial and gastronomic vocation of the district continues.

The Neighborhood
Testaccio is a great place to wake up in the mornings. The odors of locals cafeteria and croissants climbs up the walls of the old buildings and makes your day start in a happy mood!. Imagine yourself coming down from the stairs and walk towards the main square and choose weather you want to seat and have your breakfast or walk to the local open market to buy groceries and cook it at home. If you like walking ,15 minutes away, alongside the river, you have Trastevere one of the most vibrant area at night . Testaccio is a safe neighborhood which is still authentic ,meaning that is not the classic place packed with tourists and tourist attractions but offers you the opportunity to have an authentic experience of the roman way of life.
